The passion for the cuisine of the Mammato Restaurant has ancient roots, rooted in the heart of the Amalfi Coast, in Maiori.
The Mammato family has a long cooking tradition, which originates around 1890 with the “Trattoria Mammato” in Maiori, founded by Baldassarre Mammato, a man of great ability and a big heart. And it is precisely from there that he opened the doors of his kitchen, a place of generous sharing and hospitality, giving life to a long tradition in catering which, from generation to generation, has cooked, served and welcomed customers with the big heart of the Mammato family.

At the end of the 19th century, Baldassare (1854 – 1931), a willing and generous man from Maiori, carried out various jobs. He was a dealer of Singer sewing machines, a municipal messenger, and founded the historic Trattoria Mammato in via delle Concerie in Maiori in 1890, from which he was accustomed to acts of complete generosity. For him, cooking was, above all, a gift, as documented by the photo above taken on the occasion of a local festival, during which Baldassarre donated pasta and bread to those who had nothing to eat (in the photo, bundles of loose pasta held tightly in the hands of the person who received the gift).
In the same photo Vincenzo Mammato (1899 – 1951), the only one of Baldassarre’s eight children who followed in his father’s footsteps, carrying on the second generation of Trattoria Mammato together with his wife Lucia. On 10 October 1954 a tragic flood completely destroyed the premises in Via delle Concerie. The only surviving objects were a dresser and the gate placed under the arch that opened the staircase to the restaurant. But, strengthened by the teaching and tenacious spirit of the Mammatos, in 1955 the place was reborn overlooking Via Giovanni Amendola on the Maiori seafront, where it is still located today.
At the end of the 70s the Mammato restaurant passed to the management of the third generation with his sons Alfonso and Pasquale Mammato. However, following the premature death of his brother Pasquale in 1990, the management of the business continued in the hands of his brother Alfonso and his wife Antonietta Fortezza who became the heart and soul of the business, transforming over the years, with passion and sacrifice, the “Mammato” from a trattoria serving typical dishes to a reference restaurant for lovers of Mediterranean cuisine and fish specialties on the Amalfi Coast.
It is with “Donna Antonietta”, a generous mother and grandmother, that the fourth and fifth generations grow up. Between kitchen pots to move and wash, pizzas to take out of the oven, and hot dishes to be served with a reassuring and welcoming gesture, which is fully part of the inestimable heritage of values left as a legacy. Assisted by her daughters Maria and Lucia (fourth generation), she carried on the long tradition of a cuisine lived with love, sacrifice and infinite passion, until the day of her passing in 2021. Subsequently, the two Mammato sisters were succeeded by their respective children Alessia and Salvatore, thus bringing the Mammato Restaurant to the management of its fifth generation.
Today the Mammato 1890 Restaurant in Maiori continues its long history of cuisine made with love and passion, through the management of Salvatore, the cuisine of his brother Francesco, and the warm welcome of their mother Lucia Mammato.
A heart, that of Mammato cuisine, which has been beating for over 130 years, passing from generation to generation.
Come and feel the warmth.
